Color is energy. It is light of different wavelenghts and frequencies. The universe has electromagnetic waves travelling at a terrific speed of 186,00 miles per second. These electromagnetic waves are the product of constant vibration of waves of energy. These electromagnetic waves has wavelenght ans speed of vibration. This influences the color we see.
It is this properties of light that enables the blind to be able to identify colours with their finger tips easily. The energy of the color creates an effect on us when it enters our bodies. This tells us why babies tend to cry in a yellow painted room. Yellow tend to irritate the eyes, causing slight strain. This effect is felt more in babies since they are very sensitive.
The mere perception of red color enhances the human metabolism by 13.4 %(source: Theroux 1998). Generally it has a stimulating and appetizing effect, that is why it is often seen in restaurants. Red is a strong tool in advertising; it evokes erotic feelings(red lips, red nails, etc).It is also used when promoting energy drinks, cars, etc.
Color choice affects teaching and learning process. Faily(1997) found out that the use of warm colors and brilliance of lighting in schools will cause increase in brain activity, respiration rate and heart action. These effect are a product of the properties of color.
